[Tutorial] Enabling DVD Playback

Description: Modify your Wii to be able to read DVD's, not just Wii games. This will later be used to be able to read DVDs in other applications, such as for emulators.

Disclaimer:
Neither I nor the Brewology network are responsible for anything that happens from following this tutorial. Any time you modify your Wii's software you run the risk of rendering your Wii useless or "bricking". Only continue if you are fully aware of the consequences.

Requirements:
-SD card
-PatchMii Installer (If you have a modchip)
-DVDX installer
-Mplayer-r27458 or later (As of now, NOT MPlayerWii)
-Homebrew Channel (for this tutorial)
-Internet connection for your Wii

All files can be downloaded from our WiiPack! Generator

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
If you do not have a modchip in your Wii, please skip to step 2
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Step 1: Run the PatchMii installer. It will download the necessary files and install them as soon as it is run.

Step 2: Go to and run the DVDX installer.

If you DO NOT have a modchip and did not run the patchmii installer, select "Normal Install".

If you have run the PatchMii installer, select "PatchMii Install".

Step 3: Run Mplayer and enjoy DVD playback.

okay, I dont know if im supposed to be allowed to ask questions for this tutorial, but I can't figure out what to push. So, I have the MPlayer LIBDVD (or DVDLIB i dont know which one) edition, and I ran the DVDX Installer without the patchmii, cuz I dont have a modchip. So, I run the special MPlayer, put in the dvd, and what do I go to? do I go to DVD...Play DVD, or DVD...Play DVD(libdvd/libdi)? Please help. Also, would it matter what kind of DVD? Cause I am trying to play Bob And Doug Mackenzie: 2-4 Anniversary

(Sorry for the late response...)

I finally got round to downgrading my Wii, and I installed DVDx successfully. When I went to MPlayer, I inserted the DVD and pressed 'Play DVD'. It then froze... I could hear the Wii struggling to read the disc and eventually failing.

Any ideas?

Thanks.

You too???

The same thing happened to me with my Mplayer. Except, I'm still on sys menu 3.4. I will be downgrading as soon as I get Zelda again. Which will happen in maybe 1-2 weeks.

As of today, there's a version of DVDx made specifically for Wii firmware 3.4!
