Can't connect to internet

My laptop seems to be having trouble connecting to the internet. Everything else in my house can connect fine though. If it does end up saying it's "connected", the Internet Explorer still thinks it's working offline. Most times though the wireless won't even connect, it'll just get stuck at "Limited or No Connectivity". Also, occasionally the computer will just sit when I tell it to restart. I believe I have the AVG settings too high, but even after disabling them I couldn't get any connectivity.

Anyone have any ideas?

any anti-virus would NOT block you from accessing the internet... Yeah I had that problem once, so i re-installed windows and it all worked fine.. but Im sure there are thousands of people here who'll help you out!

ok, what router are you using? give it a reset and s=also check for firmware updates (on some)

check your router settings. some settings will muck of your access. also, make sure everything is plugged in correctly.





does your computer connect to other routers? does it connect while plugged in?

Okay for one, don't do something stupid like re-install windows. >_>
When it comes to laptops they can be a real pain when connecting wirelessly.

Your DHCP server may have assigned a faulty IP-Address.
You can fix it by going to your command prompt, and typing:

ipconfig /release

ipconfig /renew

Hopefully then you will be assigned a 192.168.1.x address.
Then go to Internet Connections, then go to your Local Area Connection, right click it, and click "Properties".
Under the "Support" tab, make sure: 'Address Type' shows: 'Assigned by DHCP'


If this is not the case, you may just need to reset your router.
There should be a button on the back/sides of your router, and you will need to hold it for 15-30 seconds.

After that, you should be able to connect wirelessly.
If it does work, you have to reconfigure your routers security settings.

Okay, a quick update.

After starting up my computer, the computer displayed it was connected and I started AVG to check it out. It said it was updating and upon checking, it actually was downloading! It finished after some time, then immeadietely did another update. And then another...After the third update, it did a fourth, but that one failed. Upon trying Internet Explorer, I was meet with the same results as before. I tried the CMD lines, but it went nowhere. I also tried using the Repair feature, but it gets as far as "Renewing IP address". I decided to restart it and then 65 updates installed. It booted up again and I used the Microsoft Verfication tool. After that, I still had no luck. I tried rebooting my router, but had no success.

try a different router. borrow a friends or something.

I'm at my school now, using the laptop. It seems to work just fine. It must either be the wireless settings on the laptop, or it's something wrong with the router.

No, I could get online with my other laptop, my PS3, my PSP, my DS, and my Wii.

Do you know if anyone's messed with the settings of the router? It could be that DHCP on the router is only assigned to use a certain IP range that doesn't provide enough addresses for all devices and at some point is causing duplicate IP addresses on your network. I would try a full reset of all settings on your router and go from there.

thats def the easiest and quickest way.

sometimes its as simple as enabling it for a computer. my friends shut off access to his computer ONLY.

I'm the only one knowledgeable of technology in the household. As for the router, it is a Netgear provided by Charter.
