All eyes are on Sony as they prepare to announce their restructuring plans in the next few days.

Sony's CEO Howard Stringer announced last December that he plans to lay off 16,000 employees from the company to cut costs after their disastrous 57% slash on their year earnings.

Word is that Stringer also plans to cut out some products from their hardware lines, like television sets, as an answer to the lack of demand from consumers. The plan is to rely more on sales of software built into their gadgets.

The Financial Times' report made no mention of the PlayStation Group's status with Sony's executives, but hopefully, if Stringer's plans pull through, they won't be under the axe. While SCEE's David Reeves is sure that the PS division is safe, the mood is definitely tense as the clock ticks down to Sony's announcement.

I don't think they're anywhere near going down. They make almost as much as microsoft.

Yeah, and 16,000 lay-offs would be about half of the PS3 manufacturing team.

I doubt they will, they would be really stupid if they would, they have so many anticipated titles coming out this year.

Companies are cutting the fat off departments, but no one has really chopped off a limb yet. Sony is just shedding some dead weight and probably scaling back production, but there's no way they would stop producing the ps3. Even if there was a rumor that explicitly said sony's discontinuing the ps3, I still wouldn't believe it. It doesn't make sense from any angle.

LOL this guy is funny. The gaming department aint affected so its safe and like what brent said, all major companies are cutting back.

Hey sony here is a ideal lower the ps3's price to $299 then you would run over m$ and the 360.

It would take forever to make a profit from selling the ps3 for 299.
